Managing Food Allergies in Preschool & School Settings
Food allergies among young children are common enough that most preschools and elementary schools will have at least one enrolled child with a diagnosed allergy in any given year. A clear process, not just good intentions, is what keeps kids safe.
1. Collect Allergy Information Before Day One
Build allergy and dietary-restriction disclosure into enrollment paperwork. Ask specifically about the allergen, the reaction severity, and whether the family has an emergency action plan or prescribed medication (like an epinephrine auto-injector) on file.
2. Keep a Visible, Up-to-Date Allergy Roster
Staff who serve food (teachers, aides, kitchen staff, or an outside caterer) need an easy way to check which children have which restrictions. Many programs keep a laminated roster in the eating area and update it every time enrollment changes.
3. Prevent Cross-Contact, Not Just Cross-Contamination
Cross-contact happens when an allergen transfers from one food or surface to another: a shared serving spoon, an unwashed table, or food prepared on the same cutting board. Separate prep surfaces, labeled utensils, and hand-washing between food handling are simple habits that meaningfully reduce risk.
4. Communicate Clearly With Parents
Share the weekly or monthly menu in advance so parents of children with allergies can flag concerns before mealtime, not after. If a menu item changes last-minute, a quick note home (or to the classroom group chat) goes a long way.
5. Ask Your Meal Provider the Right Questions
If meals are catered, ask how allergens are tracked per child, how kitchens prevent cross-contact, and what happens if a substitution is needed on short notice. A provider who can answer these clearly is one worth trusting with your students' safety.
